This is just a heads up in case you have not yet tried Omega 3. For Tatiana and George here it seems to be producing the best results of any method tried so far. Certainly between December 2008 and Summer 2009 we spent a fortune on this gluten free casein free diet, plus xylitol and all the other things involved in that diet, with no effects either on removing the "offending" foods, nor on returning them to the diet also. The idea that autism is caused by improper digestion of gluten and casein producing some morphine like substances may well be the case for some autistic children, but, it would appear, not ours. However, omega 3 contains as part of it a mild chelative acid, aiding the brain to rid itself of mercury. There is no way to take part of a child's brain and see if there is mercury in it, the only thing to do is to chelate mildly, and if there is an improvement then the suggestion is that thimerol or other sources of mercury and/or other metals has caused the condition. At the present time the amounts of metal in and around us, through vaccines, through food, even in the air, with the exception of lead which has decreased since unleaded petrol, is much much higher than in previous generations. Even 18 years ago, when there was already a fairly well developed diagnostic apparatus for autism, about 1 in 8000 UK children were born autistic, as the NAS were quoting back then, now it is one in 300. A startling rise. This completely discounts the idea that a gene of ...

An Irving, Texas, woman told a 911 operator that she strangled her two young children Monday because they were autistic, according to a recording of the call. Saiqa Akhter, 30, has been charged with a single count of capital murder in the deaths of her 2-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, police said. Dallas County Police spokeswoman Jamille Bradfield said the single count covered a child under 5 and would probably be changed either to include multiple victims or to add a count. "I'm just not sure which direction the police will go yet," she said. A woman who identified herself as Akhter called police Monday evening and said she first tried to kill her children with bathroom cleaner, but they would not drink it. She told the 911 operator that she then strangled them with a wire and that they were on her bed. Police and paramedics tried to resuscitate the children, but Zain Akhter died at the hospital Monday, and his younger sister, Faryaal Akhter, died at the hospital Tuesday evening, according to authorities. On the tape, the woman tells the operator, "I killed them. I killed both of them. I killed my both kids. ... They are not doing anything. They are just blue. They are not taking any breaths. Their heart is not beating." The operator asks her what happened. "First, I tried to give them bathroom cleaner. I put in their mouth, but they don't drink it. I want them to drink it. They don't drink it. ... I grabbed their neck ... and they are no more," she says on the ...

A video I made for a class I'm in, "Art Through The Ages." This video is about Art and Music Therapy for children, teens, and adults with Autism. I used Adobe to change the pictures into sketches, Crosshatch paintings, paintings using angled strokes, oil pastel paintings, and old paper photographs. The music used is Bette Midler's, "God Help The Outcasts." I help teach younger autistic children and a few have told me they feel they "don't belong."

To purchase the unique music you hear visit AutismEpicenter.com... This is the music of Linda Conrad, suitable for all children, but especially for those with autism. Her tunes are catchy, practical, and they deal with issues that autistic children are well familiar with like biting, hitting, personal space, etc. The video portion is of my family. My 6-year-old son, who dominates most of the footage, has autism.

The number of children in the US diagnosed with autism, a development disorder, continues to rise at an alarming rate. A new report points to a 50 per cent leap in the last two years, but adds that might be due to greater public awareness of the condition. However, as Kristen Saloomey reports from New York, many parents of autistic children are still missing out on vital help.

FINDING THE WORDS - (This is the Short Version of recently released documentary)- A Documentary about Children Recovering from Autism FINDING THE WORDS is the story of eight "perfect babies", each given a grim diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as toddlers, whose grieving families fight prejudice, misinformation, and despair to get their children well again. Filmed in thirteen locations across the United States, this hour-long documentary is an ensemble piece, presenting home videos, photographs and medical reports of each family's long, emotional journey; as well as interviews with the families, the childrens' doctors, and therapists. Commentary on these remarkable stories is provided by a courageous group of doctors working to rewrite the future for ASD afflicted children by accepting a surprisingly controversial premise: autistic children can recover. The worst thing I've ever heard Michael Savage Say (2nd to telling a gay man to die of AIDS): Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. For a long while, we were hearing that every minority child had asthma. Why did they sudden -- why was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I'll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], "When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], 'I don't know, the dust got me.' " See, everyone had asthma from the minority community. That was number one. Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot." Autism -- everybody has an illness. If I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, "Don't behave like a fool." The worst thing he said -- "Don't behave like a fool. Don't be anybody's dummy. Don't sound like an idiot. Don't act like a girl. Don't cry." That's what I was raised with. That's what you should raise your children ...

When you found out that your child or children had autism what did you do and how did you react? what were your children's first signs? and what makes them autistic? have you done anything with your child or children to help them come out of the autistic world? Do you believe that it is a gift? why do you think god choose you to be the parent of an autistic child?

I'm looking for other parents who have went through recovering thier child from autism any help is greatly appreciated. Also, if any parents are in phx, arizona that would help a lot with any local sources out here thanks.

i teach gymnastics to kids ages 4-18. mostly younger. i am doing a project on communication and disability. how would you want a teacher to come up to you if your child showed signs of a disability? add, autism, adhd...anything. would you want the teacher them self, or for them to go to their boss?
as much info would be wonderful :)

Two of my grandkids have severe Autism. We are trying to raise sufficient funds to cover the costs of obtaining 2 Autism Service dogs for them. Need ideas which won't cost a fortune to initiate. Their big sister age 12 is sewing fabric tote bags to sell, and we've had a couple of local fundraisers. Any ideas, must be legal and family-friendly. Thanks.

I have some questions I would like to ask other parents or caregivers of an autistic child or anyone else who has been touched by autism.
1. what do you think are the most important things an autistic child needs to learn?
2. what have been some of the hardest things you've experienced as a parent or caregiver of an autistic child?
3. If you could have any questions answered about autism, what would they be?

at what age did you notice your child wasn't developing "normally"? what signs were there that he/she might be autistic? what things can you attribute to autism that other parents should look out for?

i have a 2 year old son showing signs of autism....a friend of mine said he might have aspergers since he is high functioning. He is going to the doctors next week so i would like to be armed and dangerous for when we go so i at least know what i am talking about. please help me.

i have an almost 3 year old son who has an evaluation for autism in a couple of weeks. he has a lot of quirky behaviors and signs of autism, but he isnt socially withdrawn like most asd kids are. instead he knows no boundaries with people. he has zero stranger anxiety, and will walk up to anyone. his speech is 2 years behind where it should be now... when we first saw the dr. about the speech and motor delays, he said his delays were only 10 months behind, now he is walking so that has caught up some (still not quite what it should be) but his speech delay has grown even larger. we are working with early intervention, but are there any other resources out there? any other advice or tips? oh, and we are in south dakota if that makes any difference.

Like all mom's I'm a little worried about Autism and the link to MMR. I have seen tons of different studies proving that it is linked and tons the it isn't linked. I don't want to upset anyone, I'm just trying to educate myself on Autism and vaccines. Here are my questions:
1. Was your child vaccinate with MMR?
2. How long after the vaccine did your child show signs of Autism?
3. If your child received that MMR vaccine, did they also recieve the Chicken Pox vaccine the same day?
Thank you in advance to those that answer.

My four year old son has Pervasive Developmental Disorder. I also have a 3 year old son, and two daughters ages 1 year and 1 month. He has a tough time transitioning but I'm trying to put them all on a shedule that works for everybody - thank God I have a husband or I'd never get anything done.
Neither of my daughters breastfeed - and I will not be told I'm bad mother because of it - so that makes it easier. My three year old has average communication skills and my oldest daughter (and my oldest son for that matter) both sign. I'm doing all I can think of, but if anyone has any other tips I'd really apprecite it.

I am doing a project and I need craft or any ideas that children of all ages with Autism like to do. I am making a box, and putting activities in it for them to do. I also have to make boxes for preschool handicapped children ages 3-5. So please any projects, arts and crafts, or just any ideas will do me a tremendous amount of help!

I have a 13yr old, almost 14yr old step-daughter who was public schooled throughout Elementary & I have been homeschooling her for 2yrs now. She has made some significant improvement such as learning to write in cursive, learning some common knowledge, better reading & spelling skills but I see some signs of some learning problems. Her spelling is pretty bad, I've noticed she spells a lot of words phonetically, such as Missouri she would spell Misery, she has a very hard time remembering things like multiplication tables, she still does not know them & certain answers she gives me to questions I ask. Such as where is Atlantic City, she replied in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It wasn't so much she didn't know the correct answer, it was the answer she gave that was troubling & we had been over the material many times. These are just some examples. I see some pretty clear signs of what looks to me like ADD (her father was diagnosed with ADHD as a child, I'm not sure if her biological mother had any learning disabilities)& I'm not sure if there is another problem though, like a learning disability. I was wondering if any other parents have had struggles with this type of thing & what you did to help your child. I am hesitant to put her on medication until I further research the side effects & long term effects & I am not certain I want to have a public school evaluation. Anyone who has any experience with this type of thing, any help, advice, or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Just for the record, I just want to clarify one other thing, me & my step-daughter get along very well, we are very good friends, I raise her & take care of her. She says that I am her mom. Her biological mother has alcohol issues(didn't drink during pregnancy) & our 13yr old was not being very well cared for, she was struggling academically & she had severe Psoriasis, so I started to care for her. I mention this so it doesn't come off as a behavioral issue. She is very helpful, sweet, & respectful & we have a wonderful relationship.

My son is 3 years old. My sister seems to think that my son is autistic. I don't think he is but I still want to get him tested just to be on the safe side. He does show some signs like he covers his ears when he is scared or nervous and he won't answer to his name. He also doesn't ask for anything and doesn't verbalize much. I should mention he is an only child with no playmates. At the same time I think he is just fine. He can tell which letter is which and can spell anything he looks at but doesn't know what he is spelling. He counts to 30-10 instead of 40. Its so funny! He hugs me soo tight and tells me I wuv you! I always thought he was fine but they have planted the seed of doubt. What should I expect when I go see the doctor?

I have a sweet little boy with Autism (PDD-NOS),and I was wondering if there are any parents out here that have their children on a gluten/wheat, casein/lactose, refined sugar, yeast, free diet? What other foods seems to trigger their behaviors? As a mom, Ive taken these things out of my sons diet, and I've noticed improvement. IF so, have you noticed any signifigance in the improvement of your child's behavior? I would like to hear from you.

I am a concerned mother with a son who is two, I just wanted to know what was your child's most prevalent signs before getting diagnosed.
my son talks, but maybe not at the level he should be at, he can count and sings songs but doesn't put together words and his vocab seems limited. He just seems a little off sometimes and then at other times he seems perfectly normal...... he just seems most times like he is unhappy he just doesn't smile all that much at all. he body rocks but only at night time or when he is tired. He is def. over active but it seems like adhd can mimic other things. please help

when did you find out and what were the signs?
did they look into your eyes and giggle as babies then just stop?
im sorry if this is too personal, im just trying to research for my son. thank you for your answers:)

I have a five-month old son and, like most mothers, am concerned about autism. Currently my son tends to get very hyper at times to the point where he shakes with excitment. This could very well be normal baby behavior. He also seems to have a hard time settling down and getting comfortable for bed or naps, but eventually goes to sleep, though. I also need to mention that he is asthmatic and is on two types of pumps. This behavior could be an effect of the pumps, although I've heard conflicting feedback about the effects of albuterol (even from doctors). So my question is to the mothers of autistic children who have great insight, especially thinking in retrospect, of what the early signs were for thier children. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. I would much rather solicit this information from people who have experience, than to read and search through an enormous amount of internet information. I do understand also that I could just have a hyperactive kid

Creative Therapy for Children With Autism, ADD, and Asperger

Product Description

It is no easy task to find a teaching technique that can truly change the course of a child with special needs. Thirty years ago, when Janet Tubbs began working with children who had low self-esteem and behavioral problems, she developed a successful program using art, music, and movement. Believing that unconventional children required unconventional therapies, she then took her program one step further--she applied it to children with Autism, AD/HD, and Asperger's Syndrome. Her innovative methods and strategies not only worked, but actually defied the experts. In this new book, Janet Tubbs has put together a powerful teaching tool to help parents, therapists, and teachers work with their children. Th (more...)

Of all the information we have now about autism.. and everyone saying that it is not linked to immunizations, I want to know who out there has not had there child immunized that has autism? I am asking because I have a son with Cerebral Palsy and when taking him to his therapies over the last 2 yrs I have spoke to many moms with children with autism .. and read many articles on it as well, and the majority of those people said they only seen autistic signs in there children after having certain shots.. and running high fevers. Now if I see this as a link... why does no one else? Wouldn't you call it a link between the two? Please do no give me reasons why shots are good.. that's not what this question is about.. I know those answers. I have done my research and this is just part of it. I am trying to educate myself more on autism. If anyone knows of a link as well where this statistic is written please attach it to your answer. Thank you.

Is there an organization for children or adult with severe autism that they can live in? Possibly affiliated with the state, has case manager in Kent, WA area? It's like an apartment like type of setting. If so please provide the name and contact info if possible, thanks.

My son has not been diagnosed with autism, but I have a feeling something is up. He went to the doctor recently and the doctor said he was ok, but of course doctors don't know everything, and things can be overlooked easily. What signs did your child have that made you think your child could possibly have autism. Sharing your experience is appreciated.

Looking for info on Natural ways to help Autism and an easy way to do it (financially) I found a good bit of info on a web site www.health-reports.com/autism but it is very expensive and totally out of my reach. Looking for a cost effective Natural way?

From what I've been reading, it looks like testing wouldn't be conclusive until my child is at least 2-3 years old. She's only one-year at this point but there are little things she does that make me wonder. I don't know if I'm just being worrisome or there's good reason to suspect.
I'm just wondering if there were signs very early on, like in their first year, that you had a "feeling" that something was special about your child. I appreciate you answering. Thank you.

I volunteer at a Hippotherapy ranch, and for those who don't know what that is, its a Program for people with Special needs, they ride and take care of horses as therapy.
Because most of my students are younger than 6, and have Autism , they don't speak much at all, and some use sign launguage.
I want to know how to get them to be more calm and social around me, because I can be very shy some days.
I really want to get more involved inmy work.
Thanks!

I want to buy a book on Austism with information like what is autism exactly, what to expect, what are the treatments available and parenting tips for parents. And also one that is uplifting.

We started a school for children on the autism spectrum in September 2006. It is a sensory immersion school focusing on the hyper/hypo sensitivites, social skill work based on relationship development, cognitive skill building based on kindergarten benchmarks, language development using sign language to aid in spoken language and nutitional therapy.

We just want to get the word out. I personally was desperate to find a program that fit my son...I in turn, helped create one.

What is The Forever Story and what does it do for children with autism?

My neighbours son has autism. The only difference between him and my boys is that he has a speech delay and are somewhat agressive. He is 4 and my boys is 6 and 4. I really want my boys to interact with him and play with him, but find it hard to explain to them why he sometimes hurt them. We reached a point were they do not want to play with him and I feel really sad about it. My neighbour is lovely but I can see in her eyes that although she understands it is painfull.
Does anyone has advise?

I have a 3 year-old who I suspect is autistic, due his lack of vocabulary, and some odd behaviors, like clapping his hands in frustration, extreme hyperactivity, covering his ears and echolia. He is on the waiting list right now to be diagnosed. He's been in speech for over a year now to no avail. What were the signs and symptoms that your kids displayed or did display? Did they develop normally and then regress or did they start behind and stay behind. I am interested in knowing how life has been for your kids i school and coping with everyday life. I'm so worried that when I am no longer here my son won't be able to care for himself. Also I am 31 weeks pregnant and I was wandering if you had multiple children with autism, however I am divorced so my children donot have the same father.

As a mother of two sons, one with moderate-to-severe autism and one without, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to juggle the needs of all the members of a family when one of the members has special needs.  Raising a child with autism is not an easy endeavor- getting the right services for your child, working to improve developmental skills, and dealing with the daily challenges unique to autism can be as much work (if not more!) than a full-time job.

This article addresses the challenges unique to raising siblings of children with autism: children whose needs can sometimes be overshadowed by the more obvious ones of their special sibling.  I am not a psychologist or a doctor- just a mom who has made a fair share of mistakes, and picked up some pointers along the way.  I hope these suggestions are helpful to you and your family.

Spend one-on-one time.  Spending time alone with your child is a great way to make sure he or she doesn’t get lost in the shuffle of the daily grind, or ground down by all-autism, all the time.  My son and I started a vegetable garden together, which provides peaceful quality time outdoors for both of us.  The tasty tomatoes, peppers, and carrots are a nice bonus too!  We also bake together, once in a while, just the two of us, and he is my official grocery shopping helper.  Little activities like that can add up to quite a bit of time during the week, and a stronger relationship.

Teach your child about autism.  Depending on the age of the child, there are a variety of media resources to help children understand autism, including books and movies.  Teach your child the word, and what it means for his or her sibling.  For example, I began very simply with my youngest son when he was 3 years old, and told him that his brother had autism, and had a hard time using his words.  As he’s grown older, I’ve explained more, about impulse control, meltdowns, and food aversions - in kid-speak, of course!  This way, these are just simply facts that he has in his mental file about his brother, alongside such useful information as ‘has brown hair’ and ‘loves trucks’.

Acknowledge his/her feelings.  Some days you probably hate autism too, and get really frustrated by your child’s behavior.  Maybe you were embarrassed by the meltdown in the grocery store too.  You grieve for the child you might have had.  Your child may grieve for the brother or sister he/she might have had too.  Acknowledge these feelings, without dwelling on them.  Make it safe for your child to express his/her feelings without repercussions.  Burying feelings isn’t healthy for anyone, including children, and in this case, it may lead towards resentment and guilt towards his or her sibling.

Make sure your rules are fair.  In my house, the rule is that everyone does what he or she can do.  Autism is not allowed to be an excuse.  Even though my eight year old son has moderate-to-severe autism, there are still several chores he can do, with supervision and assistance.  It is good for your child with autism to learn responsibility and self-help skills.  It is also good for demonstrating inclusion principles right in your own home.  If your child without autism has chores, and the child with autism has no chores, resentment may also build, and that is something that should be avoided wherever possible.

Don’t forget the positive praise.  Praise your children.  Frequently.  If it doesn’t come easily, try using statements like ‘I like how you…’, or ‘It makes me so happy when you…’.  Children need to hear more praise than criticism in order to develop a positive self-image.  Cultivate the habit.

Have reasonable expectations.  No child is going to behave perfectly.  Just because your child doesn’t have autism, doesn’t mean he or she is going to be an angel.  My husband and I have made that mistake, and were grateful when another mom pointed it out (discreetly) to us.  Kids are going to be kids.  Making mistakes, misbehaving, and testing boundaries are all part of the learning process.  Are you perfect?  I know I’m not, and I don’t expect either one of my kids to be either.

Don’t let autism rule your family’s life.  A diagnosis of autism can often mean lots of therapies and treatments and appointments with specialists.  My son receives speech therapy and occupational therapy twice a week after school (on alternating days), for an hour each session.  Parents who are following ABA protocols can spend even more time!  It’s time consuming but necessary.  However, I refuse to schedule any therapies on Friday or over the weekend.  That’s our family time.  I also arrange to have my younger son participate in an after school program he really enjoys, so that he doesn’t have to sit in a clinic for an hour waiting for his brother.  That way, therapy is accomplished, and no one (with the possible exception of me) is bored in a waiting room.

Keep your marriage strong.  One of the first things I read about when I was researching my newly-diagnosed little boy’s disorder was the shockingly high divorce rates among parents of special needs children.  My husband and I agreed that we liked being married to each other, and wanted to keep it that way.  Some of the strategies we’ve pursued in keeping our marriage strong is keeping a date night, at least twice a month.  If you don’t have reliable respite care (parents or friends, for example), contact your local social services agency.  Many social services agencies maintain resource lists for consumers, including lists of agencies which provide respite care.  Your marriage is worth the effort and the expense!  Other valuable insights I have gained through this journey is the importance of being patient and gentle with one another, and taking care of one another.  You are partners on this parenting journey together, and the easiest, most loving way to complete the journey is by staying happily married.  Both kids need that from you.

Keep your stress level as low as you can.  It’s not as impossible as it sounds!  I understand exactly how difficult that can be.  Raising children is a juggling act; raising a family with autistic and non-autistic children is a juggling act on a unicycle.  That is why it is so crucial to find personal time to take care of yourself.  I take care of my garden, meditate daily, take bubble baths with a good mystery or romance novel once or twice a week, and get on the elliptical to exercise two to three times a week (whether I want to or not).  These are things which keep me sane, and refresh my spirit.  My husband plays video games and has poker night with the guys.  It’s finding what works for you.  It’s not selfish to find time for yourself.  Nourishing your mind, body and spirit helps you to be strong for your family.

I hope that following these suggestions will help as you raise your ‘mixed’ family.

im just a little paranoid b/c i notice that my baby who is now 11 month usually when playing with a toy or watching tv he will be so engaged in it that when i call his name, he wont turn to look at me. if he is alone or not looking at anything then if i call him or make a noise he will look at me and smile or come toward me. He also doesnt seem to know how to play with toys the way they should be played with--ie he doesnt roll a toy car, he'll hold it in his hand and flip it upside down...and also he doesnt know how to stack blocks or to put things into a container--he will take things out of a container but not put them in even if i show him how to do it; he doesnt know how to clap his hands although sometimes ill see him trying to do it--he doesnt clap with open hands--jsut puts his two fists together..and he doesnt know how to wave hi/bye ...im just a little worried--are these signs of autism or some other problem??

i have 2 year old triplets 2 are showing some signs of autism they will only eat 2 diffrent types of food they spend there times rocking back and forth banging there heads they have no speech at all do not respond when you call them and some times appear deaf i have gone to my health nurse who said there fine leave them they'll grow out of it i made an appiontment to see a doc but want to know what others thought and if it is normal behaveour

I am wondering what works for others as far as behavior strategies, systems, plans etc. My son is six years old with several diagnoses including adhd, bipolar, and high functioning autism. His behavior is a major issue. We have tried time outs, reward systems where he got stickers and then a reward at the end of the week or day, 123 magic, and more with no success. Any ideas?

My family will be moving to California and work in Oakland, CA which is along the bay area of San Francisco. We need help in moving and looking for the best place to get services for my daughter with Autism.

What was the first signs you noticed including hind sight? Do you feel its releated to vaccinations?

my boyfriends sister has autism. i was just wondering what the chances would be of our children inheriting it?

My wife and I have 1 child who is autistic, our oldest son who's 8, he's borderline autistic, meaning he's alot like the other kids he's in school with, but has some of the signs of autism, and we've been told that his autism shouldn't prevent him from having a normal life.
Just curious to see if anyone else has a child with autism.

It has crossed my mind for my daughter (who shows characterstics)to have autism. Any parents out there with a child with a mild case? can you email me and tell me about it. Ive been researching for some time so please do not respond with the signs of it or your opinion of what its about. I ONLY want to know personal experiences from people who live it everyday. Id rather speak privately to someone that has a child with this.

My nephew has it and he cannot talk. He is 17 now. He can, though feed himself, and go to the bathroom. Does anyone know of a child/person who has autism that came out of it and learned how to talk?

My younger brother is four and he is a twin he was born first and he is the one with autism, why did he get it and not my other brother if usually it can be the youngest twin to have any problems or disabilties and how is it diagnosed what are the symptoms or signs to look for.

I am a student teacher and I would really like some information regarding children with autism and how I can support them in their educational development.
What would you say were the most important things that I should know?
