I have 3 lovely kids, Kira 5, Dominic 3 and Codey 8 months. My son is moderately autistic and recently we have seen similar signs in our baby girl. Seeing signs of autism in such a young child is something very new to me, not to mention worrying. Dominic developed wonderfully up until the age of 2 before his developement levelled off then regressed to the age of around 18 months to 2 years where it currently remains; this was also when he began to show his autistic behaviours. I find myself wondering if Codey showing similar signs so early, will have an impact on her developement too - she has recently lost the ability to sit up and instead rocks, throwing herself back and forth when we hold her up. She has also become much less responsive to her name, has stopped babbling and is markedly harder to amuse. I'd also like to take the opportunity to apologise to PhilCommander2, I should have given more thought to this matter before trying to explain your accounts of seeing signs of autism in your son when he was a baby. It was foolish of me and I truly am sorry. Now that I see the signs in my own baby, I can clearly see that showing signs of autism at such a young age is completely plausible. (Please note that I have my arm around Codey with my hand on her tummy which I am providing a good amount of resistance with. Also, she looks at me just once or twice, most of the video she is looking at the camera which is at least a foot away from my face)

our daughter is 3 1/2... my fiancee and i have decided to have another baby. our daughter has autism and we were wondering what our chances were of having another child who has autism.. i have looked it up and found varying percentages from 12% to 80%.... my fiancee is not our daughter's biological father does that lessen the chances... either way we would love the baby as much as our daughter and it wouldn't make a difference but we were wondering what the chances.
okay i am a mnother and i know that i will call my son my baby(not a baby)(he is 20months.) In my daycare we have a little boy who will be 3 in dec. We have been trying to get him to cover his mouth when he sneezes and coughs, and we try to teach him to "use his words" He is not very understandable and he doesnt say to many real words. We have showed consern to his mom about these things asking her to help us each him. Her excuse for him every time is "he's just a baby!" I know he can learn to cover his mouth! His mother doesnt make him use his words, she just answers to his whines. If he wants milk, we tell him to say milk, etc. Is it just me or does she really need to help him? I just can't see him in preschool. I'm not saying he isn't smart, he just needs the guildence. sometimes he doesnt understand simple instructions either. He has no other signs to things like autism, so it can't be that. He is very active too.
He's way young (he's a child) but I still suspect that he might have autism. So far, he has developed everything far late from what is considered "normal." I'm not prejudiced when it comes to child growth. I think that all children grow up at different times and develop differently. But this is beginning to concern me.
So far, he's developed his motor skills really late, as well as: potty training (he's still undergoing that...), emotional stability (colicky-ness), "sharing" and interacting with others his own age (he punches, slaps, and hits little children and yells at them), as well as a whole host of other things.
I've been reading up on autism and he's showing all or most of the signs. You can talk and talk to him but he won't listen and he always does quirky things, like running into a room flailing his arms while yelling... and exiting the room in the same fashion. My parents laugh at this, but I'm getting worried. I think he'll suffer later on in life.
Please help.
I have an 8 month old little girl and she rarely smiles. When strangers talk to her she always stone faces them and I get told all the time what a serious girl she is. At first it didn't worry me because I thought that eventually she would warm to people, but looking back on pictures of my son as a baby, he was smiling way before teeth.
I've heard that it could be sign of autism but it isn't like she never smiles. She will occasionally smile when you walk into the room and she laughs all the time at my son's antics or when she is tickled, but she will not crack for a stranger or if you are trying to take a picture and making funny faces.
Has anyone else had this issue with their children? Did your children turn out to be unsocial? Is this something I should worry about?
Thanks for the input!
I am a student in college and I live with my aunt and uncle and they just had a baby. His first and second week home, he was great. Really quiet, really alert, and slept like a rock. On the third week, he had a urinary tract infection and he was in the hospital for a week getting poked and tested over and over. After that, he was a changed baby. Now, he has trouble sleeping, and naps about one hour and then wakes up really really cranky and always looks angsty. It's really frustrating sometimes because my aunt becomes overwhelmed and cries because she doesn't know what to do; and often is just restless. The baby is also restless and cries for about an hour every night; red in the face, tears all over, and his voice gets hoarse; before he goes to sleep. He sleeps pretty well throughout the night and does well in the day, with an ocassional fussiness episode between the hours of 12pm-2pm. Lately we notice that he looks at the ceiling a lot. He laughs all the time, and coos with us and at us. He was a full term baby and is extremely alert for his age. He likes to watch tv and cartoons, and we think its because the colors catch his attention. Last night he was up for about 2 hours crying and crying and finally caught his sleep but woke up about 10 minutes later and cried some more and then slept about 3 hours straight. His nightly sleep pattern is strange and worries us. Today we were at my grandmas and he was staring at the ceiling fan. I've heard It really worried me. I didn't tell me aunt but it's had me thinking a lot . I know staring at ceiling fans is a sign of autism but should we be worried. My mom does physical and occupational therapy and said sometimes they recommend buying babys caps to keep them from staring up too much; and that exercises for the babys could include: laying them on their stomach and talking to them while playing with bright colored toys. Today he was also looking at the ceiling again and bursted out in laughter and cooed a few times. At our house, he lays down for a bit, but then gets frustrated and starts moving around a lot and whining. Today at my grandma's we layed him down and he was fine; smiling, cooing, and staring at everyone. Can anyone tell me what they think it is. He has a very very hard time going to sleep? Sometimes he cries for an hour straight, and all we do is rock him, try to change positions and nothing helps. We give him baths or wipe him down with wet clothes. The room is always cool for him. Lately he's also been throwing up a bit of milk and it looks clotted. What do we do?
hi, my baby cousin is 10 months old and still cant crawl and can barely roll over. well, her doctor says she needs "baby physical therapy". Is this true or is this just a guy looking for money?
what are the ages babies start to crawl and roll over?
also, is this an early sign of autism?
thanks in advance
Hi,
I had my 2nd baby girl back on Oct.6th, and ever since then she has been such a hard child to deal with. I breastfed her strictly for the first month but stopped because I couldnt take her scareaming and the way she would rock, kick her feet and squirm at the breast.
Here is a list of the way she was and still is now.
-She makes no eye contact with anyone, not even for a minute
-Screams as loud as she can;and i mean scream, she doesnt cry, she SCREAMS
-throws the worst temper tantrums
-screams over an hour at a time everyday, nothing will settle her down.
-shakes and rocks, while eating, alone and being held
-screams when and after eating
-fine one minute then scarems the next out of nowhere
-looks around in fright and goes spastic
-hardly ever smiles
-does not respond very often to her name or voices
-seems like shes more content alone
-not interested in anyone, sometimes will be in her daddy but thats it, and not all the time
-not interested in anything
-whens shes screaming, cant be distracted by anything else
-screams when taking a bath and when getting dressed
-screams when set down
-just looking or lightly touching her, she throws a HUGE fit and screams
-very paranoid acting
-hardly ever moves around;i have to give her baby exercises just to get her muscles to move
-hardly ever coos or babbles
-goes from one extreme to the next
Does anyone else have a baby like this??? I dont know why she is like this...are these early signs of autism? my husbands brother has it, adn ive read it can be genetic....
She saw a doctor twice and they said she was fine...well obviously she's not!!
PLease help me anyone, if you have expereinced this, im literally losing my mind with all the screaming! and its really bothering my oldest girl.
thanks
oh, and my husbands brother was like that as a baby, so i know its not colic, and its been an instinct that it isint colic either
i was liveing with someone that i didnt know was a registered sex offender, but he was my freind. They told me i had to leave to a shelter i did,i stoppped being around him exsept for calls because he had all my things in his house, but now they are in storage. They took my baby from the safe house, because they said they didnt trust me,even though i did what they wanted me to do.my baby has macrosephela(a large head)and now they are trying to nail me for child abuse when big heads run in his family, and dwarfism runs in mine,he is showing signs of autism i dont drink or do drugs, and i love my baby,i had seizeirs dureing my pregnacy with him i have a past, but it changed,i got away from my abuser, and adopted my girls out for their safety,at that time,it is being used against me.I have some people backing me up,includeing my baby's daddy. They have no proof of the reason why they took my baby from the safe house and now i am going to pay for a private attorney,my public defender believes them.
I'm starting to get a little concerned with my 3 month old baby he won't look at anyone in the face. If you get down and look at him, he will turn his head most of the time. Sometimes he will look at us, and play a bit, but then he turns his head after a minute or two. If you move around to get in his line of vision again, he will repeatedly turn his head away. Babies are supposed to like looking at faces:( Has anyone else had a baby that just would NOT look at you? he won't pay attention to any toys much either. he will watch cartoons for a few mins. he will sometimes watch the mobile on his swing, too. I know babies don't have the best eye sight, and I'm pretty sure he can see okay. Can he be exhibiting signs of autism, or some other type of problem already? Does he have a short attention span when it comes to people talking to her? Other people have noticed this problem, too, so it's not just us being over-conscience parents. Any advice, or solutions would be greatly appreciated!, also is he's really hyper I gues, he's alway kicks his legs and arms like really lots all day
My son is 6 and half months old and doesnt really laugh. He has laughed before, and he smiles all the time but he has never really cracked up at anything. and he'll go like days without laughing even a chuckle. I'm a new mother so i have nothing to compare this to. Is this normal? Maybe he just doesnt think anythings that funny. me and my husband laugh all the time so its not like hes not exposed to a heartful belly laugh. The only reason why i'm concerned, and probably being paranoid is if im not wrong its one of the first signs of autism. Thanks for all your help
I didn't find out I was pregnant with my second child until I was four months. I had drink occasionally before then. My daughter, now four, is developmentally delayed, needs speech therapy, and has pica. Though she displays signs of autism and lead poisoning, doctors have said she has neither. Her behavior is out of control and she's not even potty trained, as she keeps relapsing. I needed to know if my having alcohol while carrying her could of cause these issues. I need to know what direction to take with finding a diagnosis for her condition.

spina bifida, downsyndrome, or autism?!?
My bf's side and my side have no signs of it.
I didnt know i was pregnant til I was about 4 months (irregular periods) so I didnt take prenatals with folic acid. (apparently the spinal cord closes at the end of the first month)
Im 18 !
Help! really worried / paranoid. =(
I really want a healthy baby.
I have 4 months old twins. My daughter is very different from her twin brother. She is very calm, quiet, doesn't coo or smile much (rather serious baby). My twin son is very lively, responsive, smiling all the time.
I'm so worried that my daughter shows some signs of autism?
Anyone with such a different twins? Any opinions?

My 5 1/2 week old son doesnt really look at me all that much. When I try to make a sound or talk to him to get him to turn his head....he doesnt. I'm afraid of autism and I know in older children this is one of the signs. Am I worried for nothing? Is he just to young to follow sight and sound yet? Many thanks from a worried mom!
My niece is constantly walking around the house and she does not sit down to play with her toys. She touchs her toys here and there but never sits stitl for 5 or 10 mins to play with them. Her mother is behind her all the time because she is afraid her baby will fall. This is because her baby has very low blood counts, if she falls she will get bruised right away or bleeding without stopping. I noticed my cousin and her baby does not communicate all. When her baby is watching her favourite cartoon Dora The Explores, she shows no exictement nor laughing, expressions. She has Dora doll to hold when she sleeps but she never say the word "Dora" . She only says "Mama" and few words. It is so hard for me to see if she is happy or sad. It seems to me my cousin does not know about her baby's behaviours. Should I mention to her what I observe her baby and let she seeks adivses from doctors. Her baby was just dianogsed with a rare disease, so should I wait to mention to her.
I've researched... but, have a real hard time getting to the actual point here he's been crying alot since he turned 2 mths. I'm really starting to worry. I will be scehduling an appointement at his Peditricians office for his regularcheck-up but as well as for the "autism" worry...Anybody out there who can tell a lil about there experiences? or advice on what I should really be checking up aside of the: Bad "allday" crying, Too hyper at night and wont go to sleep till 4 am, Shows desperation when I place him in his play pin and does not like being there...(always want to be held)...
I appreciate all that answer!!!:-)

This is what is going on.... When we are at home, I can get my son to smile, coo and look at me. He doesn't really look at me if I'm holding him but any other time, he does. He smiles at other people when he is one on one with them. He isn't a BIG smiler or cooer, but if he feels good (not tired or hungry) he does it all. Well, when we go in public, he doesn't make eye contact with people, just looks around. He also won't smile at anyone. I was with another baby my son's age today who smiled at us, and looked at my face. I'm so worried about my son. He wants to always be held too so I feel like it isn't very early autism signs but I just don't know. I asked the doctor about it and he just thinks my son is very observent and doesn't care to look at other people much when he is up and looking around. Anyone with autistic children recognize signs like this when their baby was only a few months old? Everyone keeps saying he might just be reserve and shy?
My 10 month old waves his arms up and down when playing, sometimes with his high chair top or when we are trying to teach him bye-bye. Someone made the comment to me the other day that it was a sign of autism. Isn't it normal for babies to want to "play drums" on objects or wave their hands? My son is probably the most social outgoing baby in my circle, the only other thing he hasn't done is say mama yet lol. Should this person just have kept their mouth shut and not draw conclusions up so fast, or is this something i should seriously be worried about? First time mother here... lol
I am wondering if any one's child develop autism before receiving the shot or a long time after it. Also, has anyone waited to get the shots until their child is 2 or 3? Did your child still develop autism? Were there any warning signs or is it like most parents say - their child was completely normal and then they received the shot and their child stopped 'normal' behaviors? Is there anyway to not get these shots? My daughter is coming up on her 12 month shots and I am very worried about this one. Any answers?
First signs of autism showed up about 18mos old in my nephew -
Lack of speech
Little to no eye contact
No imaginative play (lines car up instead of zooming them around)
Very dependent on daily routine (any deviation sent him into chaos)
Very limited diet
Very closed child (wouldnt play with us, only alone)
Very frustrated due to inability to communicate
Extremely intimidated by strangers and loud noises
We got the diagnosis of Non-Verbal Autism at just over 2yrs old.
**** If the child is 27mos, as Danielle says, an accurate diagnosis can most certainly be made. The process for us started with a blood and urine tests, then a scan of the brain, hearing test, then observation of my nephew during play, mealtime etc. Its a long but gradual process. Dont expect diagnosis in a few days. It takes months between waiting for appointments, arranging follow up appointments, waiting on referrals from Paeds to Child Development Specialists to Speech Therapists.
Once you have diagnosis, you can take positive steps toward an appropriate nursery for the child, respite for you - my nephew goes to a saturday club from 1pm-4pm every saturday for Autistic kids. He is in a mainstream primary school with a base within it specially for children with autism.

Their older sister is 6 and is going into the 1st grade and she can hardly speak in full sentences. The middle child is 3 1/2 and cannot speak in sentences and likes to play alone. He also tiptoes when walking and his meltdowns are HUGE and can be violent. He doesn't understand pain to himself or others. We aren't positive that he has Autism, but the signs say that he does. The baby cannot sit up on her own but can roll over on her tummy. She also is clingy to people as is her brother. Their parents think that he has a large vocabulary for only being that old. They also think that it is normal for their baby to be at this stage. Is this normal? If not how do I talk to their parents? I think the parents are in denial. The mom worked with people with disabilities!
I noticed my cousin's baby (22 months old) has some signs of autism. She does not talk, she does not want to be hold, walks around the house all day long, never sit still, does not play with toys for even 5 mins, does not know her name or respone to command. When I look at her I don't know if she is happy or sad, no expression on her face. Should I mention to my cousin about her baby, it seems my cousin feels something about her baby but she refuses to look at it. I'm afraid if I tell her she might be upset with me. I'm very worry for my niece. I read a lot about autism, I'm almost certain that my niece has some signs of it. I know early intervention would help her a lots. How should I approach this subject to my cousin since my cousin always compare her child with mine. I have a 31 month-old girl too, that's why I could feel some thing is not right with my niece. I want to raise concerns to my cousin but also does not want to make her feel bad or sorry for herself. Thanks
No it is not possible. A four month old does not show enough of a personality to diagnose autism and what little personality the baby does show you have only been exposed to it for four months so you and the baby still do not know each other very well. Also babies develop in very different ways and at different speeds. I would say the earliest that autism can be diagnosed successfully is the age of 2
He's only a week old, and his pediatrician says everything checks out fine.
But he sometimes exhibits some of the same hand and head movements of children who are deemed mentally retarded or severely autistic.
Now, it may be that he's just "doing what babies do," and those movements may look similar because those older children simply don't move past that "infant-like" stage of development, so I'm hoping I'm just being paranoid.
But I'm wondering if anyone might know of some warning signs.
Thank you.
