After years of lobbying by the Kansas Coalition for Autism, the Kansas House recently passed a bill mandating insurance companies recognize autism as a disorder. KMBC's Dion Lim reported the measure could help hundreds of parents in the Kansas City area. Twins Gavin and Josh Cooper do what most 4-year-olds do, but what is going on inside their heads is a different world. "Basically, it's a developmental issue; you learn at a different pace," said Melissa Cooper. Diagnosed with autism, the boys have a lifetime of medical treatments ahead. Doctors visits will cost more than $3 million for each boy, Lim reported. "We had to take money out of our retirement fund. We cashed it out to help them get private therapy," Cooper said. Insurance doesn't cover a penny. But the bill passed in the Kansas House now goes to the Senate. "We need support. Contact your district's senator. We need the people of Kansas to help vote for this, please," Cooper said. Cooper said she is hopeful that other moms like her can get the care they need for their autistic children.
