The boy I babysit will be two in Sept, and he can play the harmonica. I mean PLAY it, not just make noise. He knows how to move it across his mouth making the different notes. He has SID with signs of autism, so we were wondering if maybe he will be a savant. Nobody has worked with him on this, he just picked it up and started doing it. Developmentally, for those who know, is this normal, or an amazing talent?
It could be either him showing some normalcy, or a sign of a talent.
Provide him with other instruments, and see if, after a few minutes, he can get good tone, rhythm, etc. out of them.
If yes, you may want to ask the IFSP social worker about music-based programming for him, or how to find a music teacher who also understands disability issues (he DOES get services through the public schools, right? All children with diagnosed disabilities, from birth, are eligible for supports from the public schools).
