We have three grandchildren, all born from different siblings, that have been diagnosed with autism. My husband was in VietNam and this seems to be the only thing that is different from my sister and her family and how they have not been affected. I know that they talk about vaccinations having a connection, but could there be a connection with the vaccines that the soldiers received before leaving the country?
It could be a genetic trait.
I mean, assuming the same mother and father, siblings still only share about 50% of each others genes. That means a genetic anomaly that you inherit only has about a 50% chance of being shared by other siblings.
Unless you are monozygotic twin sisters.
That means that it is entirely possible that the autism could be genetic and from you (either new mutation or inherited from one of your parents) or from him genetically or possibly from some other factor.
What you may want to do is contact a genetic counselor, possibly through your medical provider, and ask about having a pedigree (a chart showing this trait) drawn up for your immediate and extended family.
You might be able to identify the source of the problem this way. If it is your husband, then further testing might be informative. If it’s familial and you didn’t know it, it might also be helpful.
I would be inclined to doubt a connection exists. The connection between vaccinations and occurrence of autism does correlate, but vaccinations or the stuff in them has not been shown to cause autism. People that have it are born with it, they cannot acquire it later. If it was caused by Vietnam then the spike in autism would have occurred sooner.
