I am a concerned mother with a son who is two, I just wanted to know what was your child's most prevalent signs before getting diagnosed.
my son talks, but maybe not at the level he should be at, he can count and sings songs but doesn't put together words and his vocab seems limited. He just seems a little off sometimes and then at other times he seems perfectly normal...... he just seems most times like he is unhappy he just doesn't smile all that much at all. he body rocks but only at night time or when he is tired. He is def. over active but it seems like adhd can mimic other things. please help
DO NOT CLICK IN THE YELLOW BOX?
Why Not?
My second cousin is now 10 months old and he doesn't smile, doesn't respond to his name, doesn't attempt to crawl, and will sit on the floor and keep lining up toys over and over again and screams endlessly if you change the order. I've heard these can be early signs of autism. Am I right to be concerned?

My son has been worrying us for a while. We called him a few pet names when he was young - but have been consistently using his given name for the last 2 weeks. His response is inconsistent. Sometimes he looks, at other times he does not. He has a fav toy - a seahorse that lights and plays music. He likes to hold it and walk around and gets upset if I take it away. If I hide it under a blanket or under a pile of clothes, he is able to look for it and grab it immediately. Though after a while of carrying it - he does throw it away and tries tofish something else out of his toy basket. He plays pee ka boo and gives a hi 5. He waves bye - inconsistently. He also holds his own bottle and is able to recognize when I am going out - if I have work clothes on and put on my shoes he runs to me and grabs me, pulls my pants, cries wanting to go out. He loves being cuddled and will cuddle back. He loves books and will sit and be read to for as long as 15 mins. Of late he has started reading them on his own - he opens the book and will flip the pages looking intently at the pics. Those are the positives. There are however a few things that worry me about him
1) His eye contact is inconsistent. He will look at me when I sing ring around the rosies or how big is the baby etc. He will chase me from room to room and find where I am hiding if I am calling his name. But if he is in the same room he will not look at you if your calling his name. Its like he is deaf some times. He can hear the doorbell and the phone and will run to them when it rings - but he mostly ignores us.
2) He started some worrying tics. He shakes his head like he is saying no and runs around. Its pronounced when I come back from work and he is very excited to see me. He will run into my arms , cuddle and when I set him on the floor he does this running thing for a bit before settling down. He also seems to use it to say no...when he is done eating or wont do something that we want him to
2) He does not show us anything. If he wants something he will make the utmost effort to get it himself and if he cant he cries. My iphone and b'berry are of great interest and he gets upset if we have it in our hands and dont give it to him
3) There are no words from him. The only consistent sound he makes is "ath" and its non specific. There is also very little babbling with no consonants
4) He is very affectionate and loves the rough and tumble games with his dad. He likes being bounced around on my knee and likes playing hide and seek under the quilt. But he is not able to vocalise any request
5) He loves going out and esp into the elevator. He knows directions and knows which way to turn to get to our apartment. He goes into the lobby and runs around. If the lobby TV is on we cannot peel him away from it and he will not look at you no matter how many times you call his name
6) He loves opening and shutting the cabinet doors and flapping the dresser handles. He however can be distracted from it.
7) He likes all the push button musical toys and knows how to press them to hear music.
We took him to a b'day party. There were alot of people - but he did not cry. He went in and initially wanted to run out...then he spotted a play table and ran towards it. He played on it alongside a little girl but did not play with her. He did reach out to her once though to touch her face - he did this with another kid at the mall. He played with balloons etc. but mostly played on his own. He did not make eye contact with many of the adults - most people said he is so self driven!
10) At the playground he was more interested in touching all the surfaces that observing anyone. He did not cry when we put him on the swing and did not mind climbing up and down the bridge. But other than that he was fully engrossed in exploring the floor, the bench with holes in it, the slide etc.
11) He is a calm little guy with no tantrums. I have never seen him react violently to anything. He does cry when hurt but we are able to calm him easily.
My parents watched him for a year and now my in laws watch him. He does not go on very many playdates and I dont think my inlaws engaged him as much between 12 -15months. I think they just allowed him to run around. He starts daycare next week and I am hoping that helps.
His dr thinks he is fine and that boys are slower than girls. He said my sons eyes are alert and that he does not think that he is autistic at all. What should I do...are these alarming signs?
Thanks
My nephew is 27 moths old and fits many of the criteria listed by babycenter.com under their wrning signs of a social/cognitive delay. He also shows many signs as per the DSM-IV-TR. When he was younger and now he has rarely smiled unless provoked by tickeling ect., can not name many simple objects, like his cup which he has had for a year and a half. Does not know any two/three-word phrases, and will only tell you a hand full of words spontaniously. Me and my husband are very worried for his developement, but my husbands mother or father (the grandparents), nor my nephews parents think anything is wrong. My sister-in-law isn't a very effective mother when it comes to reading to him ect. but eveyone else tries all the time with him. We all see him multiple times a week. But only being his aunt by marriage no one cares what I think. I am a psuch major and have done research in this area. How can I convince them to get him tested? Or is there something else that it may be?

My 6 month has me very concerned. I already have a 9 yr. old son with Asperger's Syndrome and he displayed signs around a year old. My concerns with my 6 month old are as follows : He throws severe tantrums(throws himself back, holds his breath, screams uncontrollably & pulls his hair); He screams at the slights noises & it takes along time to console him. He also hates most baby foods, screaming &gagging when I try to feed him. His arms & feet go in a constant circular motion and when he gets excited he already flaps his hands/arms. I hope I am not reading too much into his behaviors because of my older son but I am extremely concerned. Can anyone help in this matter or give any suggestions? Thank You So Much!!! ....a VERY concerned Mommy
im not trying to disrespect him in fact i think he is the best artist of the 20th century. but seeing him and knowing about the symptoms of autism
i believe he may have been. even though he was an excellent
performer many said he was very reclusive when people tried talking
to him one on one. also some of his other behavior did show signs of
ausistic behavior. if you dont know what the signs are dont say anything but if you do please respond

He ate from a spoon from September 2005 - January 2006 but suddently stopped (When he started eating from the spoon, he would only allow me to feed him but he gradually allowed his father to feed him also. Once I started attending school again (worked 8hrs then went to school), my grandmother was the only person feeding him and he stopped eating). He displays signs of autism but has not yet been diagnosed with a specific type of Autism, but his pediatrician suspects it's mild. He also does not speak (only says ma ma and da da) but he loves to watch jeorpady & wheel of fortune and hums the music. He knows all of the motions to children's songs and counts on his fingers. He's very smart but I am extremely worried. We've seen several Occupational Therapist but no one can get him to eat. Please help

I suspect my 3 yr old son has a very mild PDD-NOS or Aspergers . He is well above average in academic skills but low in social skills . He is verbal and has 4-5 words sentences . He has only a few signs of PDD-NOS and his behavior is like a normal 3 yr old. However the school evaluation gave him an IQ of only 80 ( almost retarded) , the language specialist said he needs a lot of speech therapy because she didn't even get two words sentence . That's because he is very shy and he doesn't answers to people he doesn't know , the same for the IQ test . I feel that they will place him with these low functioning kids that are not even in the autistic spectrum , they are Down Syndrome and other speech delayed disabilities . I feel that he will not be treated at his level there and the teacher doesn't seem to be trained in autistic disorders . I wonder if he would benefit more if I homeschool him ? does he really need to go to a special needs preschool ?

spina bifida, downsyndrome, or autism?!?
My bf's side and my side have no signs of it.
I didnt know i was pregnant til I was about 4 months (irregular periods) so I didnt take prenatals with folic acid. (apparently the spinal cord closes at the end of the first month)
Im 18 !
Help! really worried / paranoid. =(
I really want a healthy baby.
I put my son down on a blanket and he'll move his head back and forth and laugh or giggle. This will go on for 15 min. At first it was cute, like he liked the way it tickled or something, but after awhile it scared me. He did it again today while in his bouncer. Just rubbed his head back and forth and laughed. It makes him look a little off. I want to be politically correct, but I'm worried he is showing signs of autism or a mental disability! Please help!

I have 4 months old twins. My daughter is very different from her twin brother. She is very calm, quiet, doesn't coo or smile much (rather serious baby). My twin son is very lively, responsive, smiling all the time.
I'm so worried that my daughter shows some signs of autism?
Anyone with such a different twins? Any opinions?

My son is 2 months old today. He seems to be very selective when he turns to voices. He seems to go into a trance once in a while and doesn't look at you when you talk to him. Other times (most of the time), he is laughing, watching you, smiling and cooing and talking like crazy! Should I be concerned about this as an early sign of autism?
hi, im 16 years old...and i only have one friend. I met him a year ago, and last week, he started having some kind of "panic attacks" he has always been fine... he talks, and he can walk, and understand everything you say to him. He is 17 , his parents just told me "not to leave him please" cause I'm the only one who understands him, sometimes, he only talks to me.
I'm worried about him, he is my best friend, i dont care if he is autistic... i really take care of him.
What can I do? his mds dont work anymore... his parents are scared too.... I've tried to talk about this with him.. but he says that he wants to escape, to go to another city with me, where he can be free. I told him, this couldnt happen, but he doesnt care.... he has "our" plans to escape in mind... i wont escape of course... but he is very shure of what he is doing, he thinks that this panic attacks are happening because they are signs... he couldnt explain this to me, he cant talk so good. HELP! WHAT CAN I DO??

We have three grandchildren, all born from different siblings, that have been diagnosed with autism. My husband was in VietNam and this seems to be the only thing that is different from my sister and her family and how they have not been affected. I know that they talk about vaccinations having a connection, but could there be a connection with the vaccines that the soldiers received before leaving the country?
I have 20 month old baby boy who as far back as October had a 12 word vocabulary. He does not say any more words, just babbling. He does not repeat anything. No mama or dada anymore. He always smiles, laughs, loves to play with other kids. I took him to our ped and she sent me for hearing test which he passed. The ped says he shows no signs of autism but could benefit with speech therapy. I called a program run through State of NJ called "Early Intervention" to see if I could arrange speech therapy. Now a team is coming here next week and another team the following day. I am being sent tons of paperwork and I have to give them all financial information as they do not take insurance and they will tell me what to pay. He will be evaluated by all differant therapists. I'm worried they will find things wrong that are not wrong. I just wanted to take him somewhere for speech therapy. Maybe I am being paranoid and should just give it a chance.

My son has been diagnosed with autism and adhd. The older he gets, the more impulsive and hyperactive he becomes. It is often hard to deal with him, especially in public, because of his behavior. He is receiving Occupational Therapy once a week in school, and will also be receiving an additional hour of outside OT soon. He is not currently on medication, as the neurologists have told me that a lot of meds that work for ADHD have adverse effects in kids with autism. Plus I am nervous about the effects they may have on him. We tried Focalin for a while, which had no benefit and even seemed to make him more aggressive. He is also on a gluten free-casein free diet. Any informative suggestions would be appreciated.

I am in a dispute with my school district over whether he is ready for junior high. The policy states that it is a team decision so the 'team' was loaded down with people who feel he is ready for junior high - I strongly disagree. Though my son is smart, has no signs of mental retardation, is verbal, reads well and plays piano/violin by ear - he is verbally and socially delayed, his expressive and receptive communication is at about age 7, has no friends and he is delayed in most areas of self care. But it is a team decision. The way I see it, it all boils down to what is appropriate for my son's continued development. IDEA is also very vague so ... how would you go about discussing the what is appropriate and arguing for retention? Would you argue on the basis of what is appropriate? Do you know of any cases where parents argued for retention for their special needs child and prevailed? Any help will be appreciated.

I am not buying it, my son received his shots for kindergarten and instantly had a fever and when it subsided he was Quit, shy and withdrawn. It effectively killed my son he has never been the same and is currently diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.
I have video tapes of him months before the vaccinations laughing and happy. He has never returned to this state. He is slow to take visual cues as well as unable to function on most levels.
Do not believe that these injection are safe and sign a religious waver, to not have this happen to your children. We had to do this with my daughter, because there is no other way to avoid these shots.

I am fully aware of the fact that the people on here are not doctors and are not qualified to diagnose. My son (just turned 3) will have an appointment with a developmental pediatrician in September for a thorough examination, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the following symptoms and what they may mean:
- severe speech delay (some sounds, and single syllable words)
- doesn't like to socialize with other kids (slightly better with adults)
- people laughing around him really bothers him
- likes smelling his food before eating it, also smells other things
- loves water (flushing toilets, playing in the tub or pool), but if he doesn't get to flush the toilet he gets over it without much of a problem
- no spinning, no rocking, no hand flapping, no toe walking (no "typical" autistic behaviors). Tons of eye contact and smiles/giggles.
- communicates with signs and knows colors, numbers to 10, and starting to learn letters.
Any ideas would be appreciated

I also noticed recently when he was playing he lined the blocks up and kept going back to them to make sure they were in a straight line and if i moved it to play he started having a tantrum...
Apart from that he has no other signs as he always loves a kiss and a cuddle... although he isn't liking toilet training either..
I researched it online but i was hoping someone here could help or offer advice...
Thanks:)

Is there a diagnostic test that can be done through a mental health clinic? I had my son in therapy for many years and has a clinical diagnosis of ADHD, OCD and mild Tourett's syndrome... I am concerned he may also have autism given all I have seen regarding the most identifiable symptoms.
Anyone know how a diagnosis is made? I want to be best equipped to help him as possible! I discontinued his therapy after a change in his therapist. He does not take any more mind altering drugs as, I really was not satisfied with how the adverse effects changed him into a different person after many tries on several prescriptions..in fact most meds made the tourett's worse. I plan to get in touch once again with his psychologist to see about evaluation. I still am not sure about him taking any Rx's to change who he is and how he acts...Do people with Autism or Aspergers rely on prescription meds? Anyone know?
